“ESKI GÖZLEVE. CUMA HAN CAMI”

Гёзлёв — старое турецкое названия современной Евпатории, этого красивого портового города на Западном побережье Крыма, основанного древнегреческими рыбаками около 2500 (!) лет назад. В разные годы Гёзлевé входил в состав как Крымского ханства, так и Османской империи. Изображенная мной Джума Хан Джами — жемчужина крымской османской архитектуры и, вне всякого сомнения, красивейшая мечеть Крыма. Её строительство началось в 1552 году, во время правления хана Девлета I Гирея, по проекту Мимара Синана, величайшего архитектора в истории Турции. Именитый зодчий построил много культовых и светских зданий, среди которых — всемирно известная мечеть Сулеймана (Süleymaniye Camii) в Стамбуле. Я впервые посетил Евпаторию в конце мая 1999 года. Помню, как сейчас: пасмурный день, моросит дождь, а я выискиваю достопримечательности с путеводителем и фотоаппаратом. Когда же, побродив по лабиринтами старого города, я всё-таки вышел к Джума Джами, то от увиденной красоты я потерял дар речи. Возле мечети сидел старик-смотритель, с которым я тотчас познакомился. Его звали Саид Челеби, и он жил в строительном вагончике на территории памятника. За пару часов Саид-ага успел рассказать мне свою биографию и провести экскурсию возле и внутри мечети. На вопрос, почему человек его возраста не живёт с кем-нибудь из детей в более комфортных условиях, он провёл меня к старым могилам слева от мечети и сказал: «Смотри, балам: вот лежит мой дед, мой прадед и прапрадед — все представители знатного турецкого рода Челеби». Ответ был понятен.


Gözleve is the Turkish name for what is now known as Eupatoria: a beautiful city and Black Sea port on the Western coast of Crimea, founded by ancient Greek fishermen about 2500 (!) years ago. At different times, Gözleve was part of either the Crimean Khanate or the Ottoman Empire. The mosque I drew, called Cuma Han Cami (joo-MAH hun jah-MEE), i.e. “Khan’s Friday Mosque”, is a true gem of Crimean Ottoman architecture and, beyond all doubt, Crimea’s most splendid mosque. The construction works began in 1552, at the time of Devlet I Giray Han’s reign, based on the project by Mimar Sinan. The latter is the most renowned architect in Turkish history who built many religious and civic buildings, including the world-famous Süleymaniye Mosque in Istanbul. I first visited Eupatoria in late May of 1999. The vivid flashbacks of that day are still running at the back of my mind: overcast skies, drizzling on and off, and me on the lookout for the landmarks with a map in one hand and a camera in another. When, after wandering through the maze of old town streets, I finally came up to Cuma Han Cami, I just stood there for a minute, speechless and bewildered. An old caretaker was sitting next to the mosque, and we hit it off straight away. His name was Saïd Çelebi and he lived in a trailer near the monument. In the next couple of hours, Saïd Ağa managed to recount his biography to me and show me around and inside the mosque. When I asked him why a man of his age preferred living in that trailer to a far more comfortable life in one of his children’s homes, he took me to the old graves on the left of the mosque and said, “Look, balam ("child"), here lies my grandfather, and my great-grandfather, and my great-great-grandfather — all of the famous Turkish aristocratic Çelebi family”. I had no more questions.
