Средневековый крымско-армянский монастырь Сурб Хач (арм. Սուրբ Խաչ Վանք, «Монастырь Святого Креста») был основан в середине 14 века на лесистом склоне горы в 3,5 км на юго-запад от города Старый Крым (Солхат). Этот район Крыма был тогда генуэзской колонией. Старейшим зданием монастырского комплекса, напоминающего неприступную каменную крепость, была построенная в 1358 году церковь Сурб Ншан (арм. Սուրբ Նշան Եկեղեցի, «Церковь Святого Знамения»). Надпись в верхней части барабана купола гласит: «Сей Божественный храм славы, на Земле — рай древа жизни: он — подобие горнего неба, обиталище Троицы. От рождения во плоти Христа в 1358 году начав, воздвигнут во имя Святого Знамения усердием служителя его Ованеса инока и родных братьев его и по духу сынов».

The medieval Crimean Armenian monastery Surb Khach (Սուրբ Խաչ Վանք, «Monastery of the Holy Cross») was founded in the middle of the 14^th century on a forested slope of a mountain some 3.5 kilometers south-west of the city of Stary Krym (Solkhat). Back then, that area of the Crimean peninsula was part of the Genoese colonies known as Gazaria. The oldest building of this fortress-like complex was Surb Nshan Church (Սուրբ Նշան Եկեղեցի, «Church of the Holy Sign») built in 1358. The inscription on the drum of its dome reads: «This magnificent temple of glory is like Heaven’s tree of life on earth; it is an image of the firmament, the dwelling of the Trinity, erected in the name of the Holy Sign in the year of the Incarnation of Christ 1358, by the effort of monk Hovhannes, his brothers, and his sons in spirit».
