THE ALMA RIVER

Глядя на эту крымскую идиллию сейчас, и не подумаешь, что 20 сентября 1854 года на берегах реки Альмá произошла кровавая битва межу русской армией и англо-франко-турецкими войсками, ставшая первым сражением Крымской войны. К слову, татарское слово «альмá» означает «яблоко». Именно в честь этой крымской реки и сражения — а не похожего испанского слова «alma» («душа») — в Британии по сей день популярно имя Alma, а в Париже сооружен мост Pont de l'Alma.

Looking at this idyllic Crimean landscape now, one can hardly imagine that on September 20, 1854, near the Alma River, a bloody battle between the Russian army and the Anglo-Franco-Turkish allies opened the Crimean War. By the way, the Crimean Tatar word “almá” (stress on the last syllable) means “apple”. It is after this Crimean river and the battle—and not after the Spanish world “alma” (“soul”)—that many British babies were named and that the famous bridge Pont de l'Alma was built in Paris. So all the people of British descent named Alma must know that they have a Crimean Tatar name!
