“БЕРЕГ ХЕРСОНЕСА ТАВРИЧЕСКОГО”
The Tauric Chersonese (Χερσόνησος Ταυρική, Chersonesos Taurica) is a UNESCO world heritage site in Sevastopol (Crimea, Russia). The ancient city was founded in the 5th century BC by Dorian Greeks as a colonial settlement on the Heraclean Peninsula in south-western Crimea. The Chersonesus Taurica and its chora served as an important gateway to the north-eastern parts of the Greek trade influence, including the Crimea and the Scythian kingdom, and maintained its strategic role for almost two millennia.
The beautiful Byzantine-style Saint Vladimir Cathedral was built in the 19th century on the ruins of the actual ancient Byzantine basilica where Vladimir the Great, the legendary Prince of the Kievan Rus, was baptized in 988 A.D. The cathedral was severely damaged, almost completely ruined, during the Second World War and restored in the early 2000s. This is by far the most sacred place for every Russian Orthodox Christian.
