Another graphic based on my visit to Veliko Tărnovo in November of 1996. In it, I depicted the city’s #1 tourist attraction, i.e. the Tsarevets fortress which was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire (1185-1393). If, while in Bulgaria, you didn’t come to Veliko Tărnovo and climb the hill with the fortress, I’ll say you ain’t seen Bulgaria at all!

Well as they say, it's the responsibility of kings to live in very central locations to keep a check on their subjects. Didn't know that classical Bulgarian monarchs Post Byzantine, Pre Ottoman where given the title of Tsar as well.

I'd say the fortresses were built at the tops of hills and mountains to be unassailable. In Crimea, Mother Nature itself provided many "cuesta" and "mesa" type of mountains with flat tops and precipitous rocky sides, so all the inhabitants had to do was to put some bricks in the cracks between the rocks and a couple of watchtowers. By the time the enemy soldiers, all in super heave armor, climbed the slopes of the mountain and came up to the vertical rocks of the town, they were too exhausted to raise a hand.
