Description
Башня куртины западной линии береговой обороны Херсонеса Таврического, обнаруженная Р. Х. Лепером в 1911 году. Засыпь внутри башни содержала большое количество кровельной черепицы, а в центре был найден фундамент четырехугольной формы, на котором стояла еще база колонны, поддерживавшей некогда крышу, крытую черепицей. Размеры башни: наружный диаметр около 15 м, толщина окружной (основной) стены 3 м. В засыпи башни встречались черно- и краснолаковые обломки сосудов и надгробий, одно из которых, несомненно, IV в. до н. э. Кладка башни и стены — это та же красивая штучная кладка ранневизантийского времени конца IV в.

This tower limits the western coastal fortification line of the ancient town of Tauric Chersonesus (a UNESCO World Heritage site in present-day Sevastopol, Republic of Crimea, Russia). The tower was first excavated by archeologist R. H. Leper in 1911. The debris inside the tower contained a lot of roof tiles and the base of a column that once sustained the roof of the tower. The outer diameter of the tower was about 15 meters, and its wall was 3 meters thick. Also found inside the tower were pieces of red- and black-glaze-coated ceramic dishes and gravestones, one of which was undoubtedly dated IV century BC. The brickwork in the tower and the wall was a fine example the beautiful early-Byzantine masonry of the end of the IV century.
